Getting Started with OBD2 Scanners
If you are new to car diagnostics, an OBD2 scanner is your best friend. It connects to your vehicles OBD2 port (usually located under the dashboard) and reads diagnostic data from the engine control unit.

Step 1: Locate the OBD2 Port
The OBD2 port is typically found under the dashboard, near the steering wheel. In some vehicles, it may be behind a small cover. All cars manufactured after 1996 have a standard OBD2 port.
Step 2: Connect Your Scanner
Turn the ignition to the ON position (the engine does not need to be running for basic diagnostics). Plug the scanner into the OBD2 port. The scanner will power on automatically.
Step 3: Read Fault Codes
Select Read Codes from the scanner menu. The scanner will communicate with your vehicles ECU and display any stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Each code has a specific meaning that tells you what system is affected.
Step 4: Clear Codes After Repair
After fixing the issue, use the Clear Codes function to reset the check engine light. Always fix the underlying problem before clearing codes.
